Not all users of fire extinguishers are aware that after their expiration date, their disposal requires knowledge and appropriate equipment. Disposing of fire extinguishers in places not intended for this purpose may have a serious impact on the environment. So what should we do with a used fire extinguisher, for example from our car?

Fire extinguishers are special-purpose products which efficiency often determines our safety, not only when extinguishing a possible fire, but also when the fire extinguisher is suitable for disposal. The latter situation definitely requires explanation, especially if we are talking about individual users who relatively rarely have to dispose of a fire extinguisher. This most often happens with fire extinguishers from our cars.

It is worth thinking globally

In the case of any waste that can be disposed of or further processed, we must be aware that the behavior of individual people is of great importance. We often hear comments that one piece of paper or cigarette butt thrown on the sidewalk should not bother anyone. But what would happen if each of us threw the proverbial “paper” on the ground instead of into the garbage can? Without a doubt, we would have one big landfill all around. The same applies to waste, which may directly pose a threat to the natural environment, and its uncontrolled disposal may have a very serious impact on the nature around us, as well as on our health and quality of life.

In the case of fire extinguishers, we most often encounter them in our cars. Less often in apartments, and most often in workplaces or public buildings. So let’s ask ourselves a question. What we usually do with used fire extinguishers from our vehicles? The answer to this question is not simple, because currently there are no public places where we can safely dispose of fire extinguishers. That is why it is so important to educate and raise awareness of how important it is for us to make the effort and find a company that will collect a used fire extinguisher that is no longer suitable for further use, for example from our car.

We have an impact on our world

It is a fact that not every commune or district has a company that deals with professional disposal of fire extinguishing waste. This does not mean, however, that we have no influence on this situation. As citizens, we can report such a need to the local government and propose the creation of a place where fire extinguishing waste, such as used car fire extinguishers, would be collected. It is worth taking this opportunity for the appropriate local government unit to look for the right company that will then take care of the collection, disposal and even processing of the collected fire extinguishing waste. Nowadays, no one needs to be convinced of the importance of environmental protection and the importance of recycling various types of waste. It is even more worth reminding the authorities of communes, districts and cities about this, where the problem of used fire extinguishing waste is nothing new, but has not yet been solved.

And all this because Skawina is the location of the plant of our company New Tech Lab, which for four years has been dealing with the collection and professional disposal of fire extinguishing waste, and also produces regenerated fire extinguishing powder, applying the “Zero waste” principle. As it turns out, more and more private people are calling New Tech Lab to ask what they can do with used fire extinguishers.

It is worth knowing that the New Tech Lab plant in Skawina primarily accepts fire extinguishing waste from large companies, plants, factories and public institutions. However, from the very beginning of the company’s operations, New Tech Lab has also been collecting fire extinguishing waste from individuals! And very important, New Tech Lab does not charge them any fees, but issues a document confirming that the used fire extinguisher is accepted for disposal.

Collection and disposal of firefighting waste is one of the two main areas of activity of New Tech Lab. The second is the production of regenerated fire extinguishing powder. From the obtained waste, the company produces fire extinguishing powder that not only meets the European standard EN615, but also received a green certificate from the Dutch Keurmark Instituut, which means that it is a completely ecological product.

Therefore, by bringing even one used fire extinguisher from our home or car to our company, we support the development of green technologies enabling the recycling of fire extinguishing waste, but also help develop a closed-loop economy. Thanks to it, we can reuse products that would normally end up in a landfill.
